A Plea to the Locals
Hey. Ontarions. Help.
Can anybody recommend a decent landline phone carrier that isn't Rogers or Bell or Telus, and that hasn't been engulfed by any of those guys? For the next few months at least, it ain't economical for me to go purely cell — but all the Big Three landline vendors seem to suck equally hard. Is there some small third-party reseller out there that I might be happy with? Or even less-unhappy than I am with Rogers?

Might want to look into Skype. My sister has it up at school, and it seems to be doing well by her: is also very, very cheap. *g*
I second the Skype suggestion. My brother uses it (here in the good ol' USA) and swears by it.
Admittedly, there are occasional connection issues, line fuzz, etc. However, if you only need it to get you through the next few months until you can go cell-only, it's probably your best choice.
While I'm not a user myself, a few of my office friends speak well about Wightman Telecom (http://www.wightman.ca/). I've been debating swapping to them for my DSL/Long Distance/Landline for awhile now, as they have a very nicely cheap bundle package that'd save me a few bucks, and nab me a few phone features I don't have now.
Might be worth a look. Skype's performance may vary depending on your ISP as well. I hear Rogers and it don't play nice at ALL.

I like the look of them — anyone who'd start his own rural phone service in 1908 because Bell couldn't be bothered wiring his farm has got some serious good in him. But they don't seem to service Toronto, just small townships throughout the southern part of the province.
Anybody have any experience with these Yak guys?
I've been using vonage.ca for VOIP both at my office and at home. The rates are excellent for my usage (20 a month), i was able to keep my landline number from Telus, and I finally feel I get something from my bandwidth. I bought just the modem and plugged my cordless phones into, was running in minutes.
Really Great Information Thanks A lot!
